The paper deals with some problems of legal protection and use of land. Among the topical issues are the following: what is the importance of land in the life of society and nature in general, as well as the political and economic importance of land; the role of legislation and legal mechanism in the use and protection of land; factors that have a negative impact on the physical and biological condition of the upper fertile layer of the earth, the reasons for their formation and ways to eliminate them.
